Cold Air Intake
Submitted By: Mark42

Description: The air intake on Firebirds is rather restrictive. There are numerous after market kits to replace the air filter and air muffler (aka air box) with a straight hose. This reduces the restriction, and keeps the intake air temp low. The 98 model year 3.8 V6 has an angled intake and the aftermarket manufacturers seem to have ignored this model.
So I decided to make my own. First a Cool Blue low restriction cotton air filter replaces the stock paper filter, then I made an intake tube from flexable vinyl pipe. This is how it was done.

Suitable Flexable Hose
One manufacturer actually uses dryer vent for this. I chose this considerably tougher product made from HDPE to make the contoured bend between the intake and air filter. Available at home centers.

The air muffler is removed, and a new intake is made using the above hose. Stainless steel clamps hold it to the throttle body. Black ABS tubing is used to make a transition between the flex hose and the air filter housing.
Air Muffler Removed

Abraision Protection Added
A piece of truck inner tube is cut and wrapped around the flex hose to keep it from wearing where it rubs the radiator. The Cool Blue filter can be seen installed.

The ABS tube fits perfectly into the original air filter bellows. Secured with stainless steel straps, its really held together well. Not the prettiest air intake, but it works and gave at least 0.5 mpg improvement in fuel economy. The throttle response is also crisper, and wide open throttle can be heard and felt, thanks to this simple mod.
