Fuel pump conversion
Submitted By: Paul Moir
Date Created: 09-19-2007
Description: The '59 10hp uses a pressurized or dual line tank, where modern outboards use a single line tank. While the single line system uses a pump to suck fuel from the tank, the dual line setup feeds crankcase generated air pressure into the tank, which in turn forces fuel up through the second line. This has the benefit of being much simpler.
I only have single line tanks. I have a 2" square fuel pump and single line outboard fittings. So rather than obtain a tank and recondition it, I converted the outboard. There is a simpler conversion using a Mikuna pump as it can be mounted anywhere, but this one is neater. If you can find one, get a hold of a later model outboard's bypass cover that already has the fuel pump mounting present.
