Replacing Trunk Carpet

Description: We're a Jeep household...mine: Green 4wd Grand Cherokee with towing. Hers: Much Fancier White Grand Cherokee.

An "old" car battery was placed in the back of hers for transport to a disposal facility. It leaked, and destroyed the carpet in her trunk area. (My mistake, I should have moved it in mine)

A check with the local Jeep dealership indicated over $400 for new carpet. 4' x 4' piece of carpet...four hundred dollars.

I couldn't bring myself to do it, and so far have been able to find the part in salvage, so in the meantime, we decided to use regular outdoor carpet to "patch" the problem.

Her Jeep Grand Cherokee
This is "Her" Jeep Grand Cherokee. In perfect condition, except for the truck carpet being slowly eaten away by battery acid!

This is a closeup of the damaged trunk carpet in the Jeep. I'll be using butcher's paper to make templates of the difficult corner sections, but for the most part will simply lay the carpet in place and cut it.

We decided on a nice grey marine carpet. It's tough, similar in color, and relatively cheap (for such a small piece). Plus I've worked with it before and was pretty confident I could do a good job cutting it.

Cut to size
After dousing the acid spots with Baking soda (to neutralize the acid..don't want the new carpet being eaten through), I laid the carpet in place and used a combination of eyeballs and templates to cut it to size.

For the cutting I just used a standard utility knife, being careful not to cut through the trunk lining.

Once the cuts were made, I laid the carpet completely in place and checked the sides for a tight fit...after a little minor trimming, I was happy with it.

Jeep Trunk Carpet - In Place
Here it is all in place and set. I didn't attach it at all. I think it's thick enough that a piece this small shouldn't wander too much.

This is intended to be a temporary solution, until I can find a replacement trunk liner in salvage; At which time I'll post a new project detailing it's installation.

Had I intended this to be a permanent solution, I would have made cutouts for the spare tire and other access points in the trunk, but for a temp...We can easily lift the carpet to access the spare tire compartment if necessary.

All Done. It doesnt' exactly match the darker Jeep carpet, but it sure looks a whole lot better than it did!
