Changing the Impeller
Submitted By: shareaproject
Date Created: 05-14-2007
Description: I've owned the boat for about three years and have never done any water pump maintenance. I've been very lucky thus far, but figured I'd better not press my luck any further. This project is me changing the impeller on my 1989 Citation Caprice Cuddy OMC Cobra outdrive.

Tools / Materials: Go to the Boating Store

3 bolts secure cover
The cover on the stern drive is secured by three bolts.

After the bolts are removed the cover comes off easily.
Remove the cover

Remove cover pump housing cover
Three more bolts secure the cover to the water pump housing.

Pull out the three big bolts holding the cover in place and remove the cover
Pull out the three bolts

Old impeller in the cover
The old impeller came off inside the cover.

Using a pair of pliers, I pulled the old impeller out of the pump casing. It's actually in pretty good condition. I'm not sure how that's possible, but I'm not going to complain. I decided to keep it on the boat as a spare.
Pull out the old impeller

The new impeller
This is the new impeller

The post is triangular in shape and corresponds to the shape of the impeller . Line them up, put the pump cover back and three large bolts back on, then replace the cover and those bolts as well. After putting it all back together I threw the muffs on and fired up the engine. Strong streams mean success!!
Match up the post
