1983 Lund Mr. Pike 18
Submitted By: Terry Olson

Description: The plan:

We'll use the boat for the rest of the season while I take some time to consider the details of the renovation. As of right now I plan to remove the existing floors, console, wiring, motor, controls and anything else necessary to arrive at a bare hull with the same plans for the trailer. I'll sandblast both to remove the flaking paint and rust before painting the interior and upper portion of the outside of the hull and the entire trailer - but the color scheme is still undecided. I'll rewire the boat and trailer, install new floors and carpet, and re-rig the boat. I'm planning to enclose the area occupied by the pump for the power tilt, the battery, and gas tank like most of the current boats are equipped.

The result:

I completed the boat in time for the 2006 boating season but as fate would have it I broke my leg (playing hockey - then discovered a related medical problem which I am still being treated for) April 30th, 2006. We had the boat on the water twice though, once on the river while there was still snow on the banks, and once just as the spring panfish bite started. I missed the rest of the 2006 season, but the boat is ready to go and by the start of the 2007 season I'll be as well.

Notes:

I bought a ton of stuff for this project on ebay. The carpet came from www.boatcarpetbuys.com, which I highly recommend.

The paint was bought locally - note to self: have the paint, primer, and other materials shaken at the store before leaving. I ended up with an inch of pigment and solids on the bottom of the can and it was very difficult to get it reincorporated into the liquids. I know this affected paint coverage and the finished appearance.

Most of the boat is as delivered from the factory. I'm very pleased with the rear casting deck. I had the forethought to make sure the pedestal seat wouldn't contact the motor in any and all positions - but I overlooked it's ability to contact the 3rd seat. No doubt over time this will result in damage to the 3rd seat, which I could have mounted a bit further forward to avoid the problem.

All in all I'm very pleased with the project.
