Here is the Tecumseh 8 HP setting COMPLETELY inside the bolt pattern of the old Briggs. If I recall this was one of those: I removed the old engine set it aside and grabbed the Tecumseh planning to hold it over the old bolts and see what it looked like, when to my chagrin the 8HP Tecumseh engine slipped right in-between the existing bolts - studs.
Being that I always like to have a "back out plan", I did not see any reason to cut the old bolts off.
You should be able to see the outline of the briggs engine round the bolts, etc
