1972 Scat-Craft Restoration
Submitted By: patuxent

Description: This was my grandfather's old fishing boat. He passed away in 1987 while on a fishing trip with this boat. My father inherited it from him and it has been sitting ever since. I even found an empty Black Label beer can in the boat, quite likely grand dad's last beer. If you ask me, having "the big one" after a full day of fishing with your buddy and a few cold beers is a pretty damn good way to go. :)

The boat needs a lot of work, but in the end it will be a great boat for the family. Meanwhile it's a cool project to work on and a nice place to start teaching my son some basic mechanics and the value of fixing things.
Tools / Materials: Go to the Boating Store

Side view before
Not a terrible sight from here.

Not so bad from here either.
3/4 Front view before

Rear view before
The hideousness begins to rear its ugly head.

WOW! Boat or Dumpster... You make the call.
Interior before

Transom before
The good news here is, when it's this rotted it's easy to remove.

The best way to really get to eveything is to lift off the topside and dig in. Note the atypical hull ventaltion system. OK, OK, they are holes in the floor, humor me.

Anyone out there recognize this or know anything about Scat-Craft boats?? There is virtually nothing out there on the internet that I can find.

The 3rd and 4th generations try to leave their mark in this old boat.

Floor Removed
After removing the floor I found some VERY rotten stringers and remarkably sloppy fiberglass work. Does all factory work look this sloppy?

This mini cesspool was water just standing between the stringers and the layers of fiberglass that had been draped over them. It didn't drain; it just sat there... amazing.
Standing Water

Lovely Rot
This is a view of the stringers at the stern. Just mush at this point.

This is the rotten hunks of floor under the bow platform. That's me waving. :) hi!
More Rot

Bonus Rot
This is a shot of the condition of the center stinger that ran from bow to stern. Even though it's completely rotten, it weighed a ton due to the vast amount of water it had abosrbed.

Finally all the stringers are removed. Now it's time for the grinder to clean up all the leftover fiberglass mess.
No Stringers

BLOODY HELL!!
OK. I was hot as hell; I was wearing a full tyvek suit, dust mask, and eye goggles. I didnt realize how far back I was, to where the "V" of the hull flattens out and the stinger grooves fade away. Yes... I ground through the hull. You can't call me anything I haven't already called myself twice, and believe me I have an extensive vocabulary of less than polite words. The good news is it's a tiny hole.

The hull is finally ground, sanded and ready to begin the reconstruction phase. The next thing is to fix the tiny hole caused by the "Grinder Incident" and then the transom. Man this is a LOT of work.
All prepped
