Laundry Room
Submitted By: Mark42

Description: Having the laundry area in the basement of a 2 story home is rather inconvenient. While planning to finish the basement, we decided that the space used by a laundry room would be better used for living space. So the laundry came out of the basement and was installed in a hallway closet.

The closet is 72" wide and 24" deep. Typical of a bedroom closet. With the sliding doors removed, total depth at the door opening was another 6", for a total of 30" deep. Still a tight fit for a standard washer/dryer. But I was determined. So I added a 1.5" spacer under the door casing to offset a pair of bi-folding doors and that worked just fine.

Check out the results....

2nd floor hallway.
This is the 2nd floor hallway. The closet on the right now contains the laundry room.

Close up of the 1.5" spacer under the door casing. The spacer is made from two 3/4" pine boards glued together and ripped to size on a table saw. This brings the bi-folding doors out enough to clear the washer and dryer. The doors are 1.5" thick so that worked out well.

Washer and dryer
We needed new machines, so we bought these full size GE washer and dryer units. They just fit behind the doors. For safety, stainless steel braided water lines are used.

With the door closed, there is only 1 to 1.5" clearance between the machines and the doors.
Tight fit

Raised lip
The entire floor is covered with sheet vinyl, and it wraps up the wall 6 inches. In the front is a 1.5" lip. There is a floor drain incase of any water leaks.

Put a wire rack over the washer. The wire rack works great because it lets the light above to shine down on the controls and into the wash tub.

Hanging Rack
Over the dryer is a hanging rack high enough to hang shirts.

Dryer needs a vent. This GE unit has options for rear or side exhaust. I used the side exhaust, ran the pipe up into the attic and out a soffit vent.

Soffit Vent
The dryer exhaust exits the house through this soffit vent. I placed it near a window so its easy to reach out and remove any lint buildup. That worked out really well.
