1978 Starcraft Holiday

Description: Bought this Diamond in the rough in the fall of 2006. This aluminum boat requires a complete overhaul. It has since been gutted and is being rebuilt. It's a race to get her done for the Lake Erie fishing season... Transom, Floor, Rivets, Add a hatch and bulkhead, interior, carpeting etc...
Tools / Materials: Go to the Boating Store

As bought
I really like the lines on this boat. It will make a good Lake Erie fishing boat. There isn't a good piece of wood on her at the moment. Plenty of wasp nests will make the initial tear out interesting!

Tandem axle trailer is old but sound

Mercury 1500 straight six

This transom is a piece of work - supports for supports.

This is a total gut... Nearly everthing is rotted. Boat was abandoned and sat exposed for a few years. What a shame.

This motor had not been run in a few years. Seller didn't know if it worked or not. Initial pressure check looked good and I suspected it was Okay. Pulled the plugs and shot it with lube - came right up to speed. Flushed out old gas and she fired right up!

Motor stand worked like a dream. Wife and I moved this beast. Everything checks out great with the motor. Intend to replace the impeller after sitting so long.

Aluminum Motor Box
Swiss Cheese has less holes!

Floor is epoxied and placed to confirm fit. Insert will be a Teak floor storage - drains to bilge.

Transom plate looks also looks like Swiss Cheese due to the previos owners use of angle iron and a kicker plate. What a mess...

Floor is placed for fit and waiting transom installation

Replacement Transom

Close-up of the replacement transom material. Two pieces of 3/4" plywood bound with fiberglass mat. Heavily sealed with epoxy.
Transom construction

Side panel refurbishment
Epoxy sealing the gunwall trim boards - these have since been padded and vinyl attached.

Roughing in the dash layout. Originally a runabout - I decided to seal off the bow area.
Starboard and Acrylic hatch

Pneumatics is the answer...
This pneumatic rivet gun is worth every penny when it comes to re-working a Starcraft. Wife is getting quite good at it - I do the bucking bar. A couple hundred rivets provided plenty of opportunity to practice.

Carpet Installed

Carpet is in... and everything is coming back together.

New Transom went in really well... everything is secured, sealed and primed. I'm glad to have this in the rear view mirror...
Transom installed

Almost looks like a boat again!
Side panels are finished - think I'll wait until I'm totally complete with cables, wiring and fittings. Getting close - A long way to go. Exterior is now complete - White.
