1974 Southwind Resto

Description: Basically, I have boat-jacked this boat from my brother's backyard. I couldn't stand to see her rot away any longer, so I have brought her home for a little TLC. She has provided us all with alot of pleasure since about 1980 when my brother bought her. And I figured it was time to repay her the favor by giving her back her youth so to speak. New floor, stringer, transom, upholstery, etc.. all rotten pretty much. Anyways this will be her story (and mine) as it goes along, keeping in mind that I have never done any boat repairs in my life, so it should be fun and interesting!
Tools / Materials: Go to the Boating Store

The new owner and his boat
As I mentioned, this boat belongs to my brother, the one behind the wheel. And that's me in the passenger seat. This photo was taken about 25 years ago.

Just a pic I found from a long time ago when the boat was in her prime. Sure like the looks of the 'ol girl. She will be like this again soon. With a few minor upgrades hear and there. Going to change the interior and get rid of the hot black upholstery, among a few other things.
Her glory days

My quest (and hers) begins.
Removal of all interior, seats, carpet and partial removal of rotten floor to expose the rotten stringer. I was actually surprised to find there is only one stringer in this old boat. Not sure yet how far forward the stringer actually goes yet, but I will, soon.

Really surprised to see that when the boat was made they didn't even completely 'glass over the stringer. No wonder she has rotted. Well, it will all have to go!

Further floor removal to the transom
That dark spot in the back really scares me...and the fuel tanks have me concerned, hope to be able to re-use them, fingers crossed.

Come on, just a little closer...
Don't be afraid.....

Oh yeah! Yuk!
More of that wonderful rotten wood! Well that's gonna have to go also! She is gonna need alot of work to give her a strong transom to support the old 115hp "Tower of Power"!

Noticed the oh so obvious wear marks on the bottom of the hull during the middle of the day. I was really surprised that evening at what I saw!
31 yrs of wear on the hull bottom from beaching and the like

See the glow?
I had my trouble light laying in the bottom of the boat that night, and when I came out of the garage I saw this....! This pic doesn't do it justice! check out the next one.

Not sure what I am supposed to do to repair this yet, since this is my first boat resto, but I will learn and fix it right. The more I look at things the more I find wrong with it. Oh well, she will be good as new (or better) when I am finished.
