Tips for creating the perfect indoor play area for kids

Description: Whether it’s because of spring rains, the heat of summer is bearing down, chilly autumn winds are blowing, or there’s an icy winter covering on the ground, there are always times when it’s not possible for children to play outside. No matter where you live, if you have children you’ll want to create a kid-friendly play area in your home that can function for those days when everyone is stuck inside driving each other crazy.

It doesn’t require a home renovation to make your home more kid-centric, but it might require some furniture rearrangement. The key is providing a variety of activities that engage the kids’ minds and imaginations. Cathy Hobbs, a writer for the Home & Garden section of San Luis Obispo’s The Tribune, suggested dividing your available play space into activity zones.

Create zones of play

“Begin by creating a move or video game zone,” Hobbs said. This part is probably easy—you likely already have a designated screen viewing area. Another zone might be designated for board games (or puzzles or blocks, depending on the age of your children). Store the appropriate games or toys close to their assigned zones, and consider making a sign or symbol to hang on the wall that shows your kids which zone is which.

Hobbs also suggested having a flexible activity zone. “This is an area that can be used for anything from train sets to dramatic play and puppetry to arcade=style games or even a pool table.” Bonus rooms make great locations for dividing off zones. You can clearly mark the boundaries of each zone with rugs, child gates, or furniture placement.

When you don’t have a play room

If you lack a play room or bonus room, you might spread the zones out throughout your home so your main living area isn’t taken up by games and toys. Put one zone in the corner of the dining area, one in each bedroom, and maybe one in a bathroom if you have a lot of water toys or activities your children enjoy.

Kid-friendly decor ideas

To liven up the play areas, use a variety of bright or warm colors which make the environment friendly and inviting for children. Hobbs added, “Dark colors will go a long way as far as concealing spills and stains.” If you choose to paint the walls, use neutral colors paired with brighter accents to make the transition to a more conservative color palette easier as the children grow up.
